CERAMICS 1
UNIT 1

STAMP PROJECT
Plan:
-wedge clay
-shape clay into tupe
-flatten the bottom
-carve out a heart
-undergalze it white
-fire
-do a clear glaze
-fire
-done!
This piece was a struggle but I am really happy with out it turned out. I brought it home and forgot to clear glaze it though!
FACE PROJECT
Plan:
-wedge clay
- make a oval ball
-flatten the bottom
-make nose and eye and mouth dents
-add balls for the eyes and put strips on top to bring it all together
-add cheek bones
-add eyebrows
-add strips for lips
-hollow out the bottom
-your done!
For one of my first pieces this turned out really well! It's really cool you how we made this so easily. I fired this one and I'm going to keep it so I can make another one and see how much progress I have made over the year.

MINI MASTERPIECE--of a famous art
-wedge clay
-flatten it (slab roller)
-cut it into a square
-use blower dyer to dry
-underglaze the whole thing green
-mix colors to create the flowers
-add stream in the middle
-fire
clear glaze
-fire
-take home!
I really liked making all of the little flowers on this. I am kind of bummed about how the stream turned out though. It was a lot less prominent before I fired it, and I don't really like how it turned out. But I gave it to my mom as a gift and she loves it so its a success.
UNIT 2

PINCH POT CUT IN HALF
-
wedge clay
-
form ball
-
press a hole in the center of the circle
-
pull the edges up around the hole
-
widen the bottom out
-
place bowl on a blue weel
-
hold arm steady to cut the top of the rim to make it even
-
smooth the inside and outside of the bowl
-
cut it half
-
done!

This piece was a lot harder than I originally expected it to be. It made me very curious if it would be easier to throw a bowl instead. If I was going to make this again I would definitely make it smother and try using a sponge because I had not discovered that method yet when I had made it.

PINCH POT TURNED INTO INTO SOMETHING USEFUL
-
wedge clay
-
flatten two pieces of clay
-
cut out a circle from the larger piece
-
cut a long even rectangle from the smaller piece of clay
-
measure the rectangle to full fit around the circle and cut any excess
-
score and slip the circle to the rectangle
-
make a worm and score and slip it to the inside of the bowl
-
smooth it with a rubber kidney and sponge
-
carve out large circles and then three small circles for the paws
-
underglaze stripes on the outside
-
underglaze the inside white
-
fire
-
clearglaze
-
fire
I had to remake this piece and use the right method for pinch pot and it took me a very long time. When I redid the paw prints I used a metal kidney to take off the excess clay on the top and it looked a lot cleaner.I am very happy with how it turned out and it is a very cute cat bowl. I did forget to take a picture of the re make but is the first version and the second turned out a lot more sturdy.

PINCH POTS PUT TOGETHER AND MADE INTO SOMETHING USEFUL

make a circle
-
press the middle
-
pull up the sides
-
even it out
-
make another one
-
score and slip them together
-
cut them apart with a wavy line
-
make a worm
-
attach it halfway down the bottom bowl to create a rim
-
punch three holes in the top bowl and dots around.
-
fire
-
paint brown with some white spots on top
-
fire
-

-

done
I decided to make this coconut because I was inspired by Lydia but hers looked much better. For one of my first pieces I am very proud. If I was going to make it again I would make the wavy line a little more discrete so it would look more realistic and I would add more details to it.

HISTORICALLY INSPIRED PIECE
-
I had to make it multiple times for the second time this is my successful process
-
wedge clay
-
make a pinch pot by forming a circle pressing the middle and pulling the sides up
-
make another one and put them together
-
make a smaller pinch pot and smooth
-
do that again
-
measure the small pinch pots on the ball and cut out a slightly smaller circle on top and bottom
-
score and slip the small pinch pots to the top and bottom of the circle where the cuts are
-
take the top small pinch pot and cut out the top of it so now you can see the inside of the pot
-
smooth everything out
-
make a pinch pot for lid
-
flatten a piece of clay and cut out a large circle
-
measure the pinch pot with the flat circle and score and slip them together
-
add a ball on the top and under glaze
-
fire
-
clear glaze
Making this project was a challenge and I had to re do it multiple times. It's a Chinese small covered vase and it's in the metro politan museum of art. Next time I would pick an easier piece to replicate. I am just happy got done but next time I want to do a better job with painting it. I chose this piece because it is very pretty and it really spoke to me when I was scrolling through looking at possible pieces I could make.

CHOICE PROJECT
-
wedge clay
-
Put through the flatterer
-

-

-
map out where I want the paint dips to be
-
carve out paint dips
-
make the flower by making five petals and pressing them in and the combining them
-
score and slip the flower to the palate
-

-
carve out mom in cursive
-
fire
-
glaze
-

I made this choice project as a Christmas present for mom. I originally under glazed it but I did not like the color so I added some pink in the flower with glaze and clear glazed it. My goal was to make the paint dips as white a possible so you could see the real color while painting but the came out a little more purple. If I were to make a project like this again I would use brighter colors originally and make sure there was no color in the paint dips so it was a true white.
